Bermuda's 1st Annual National High School Forensic Science Competition was a resounding success. The Saltus team of five SGY2 students brought home 1st place over Warwick, BHS, CedarBridge, and Berkeley. Along with bragging rights, they've won a genetic engineering kit for the school and will be guests of honor at a Movie Night Fundraiser at Bermuda College this Thursday.
Dr. Carika Weldon organized a great day of experiential learning for the students, who practiced micro-pipetting, created a gel, used PCR to amplify a segment of DNA, and ran gel electrophoresis on their samples to determine "Who stole the cookies from the cookie jar?". They then presented their conclusions to a very intimidating team of judges. Our five students were absolutely phenomenal from start to finish. They were attentive and engaged during the lesson and bonded with their university student mentors. Their scientific technique was excellent - Dr. Weldon said their gel results were absolute perfection. And finally, I could not have been more proud listening to their presentation to the judges; they were poised, confident and convincing.
